Some things were not possible in this world. Children did not have two parents who refused to love them. One, maybe, but for pity's sake, not two.

Eight hours West sat a man alone on a beach mourning an inexplicable loss. He could only think of his loss in little packets of grief at a time, because the whole thing was too great to be borne.

I may be mad, he thought, but I prefer the shit of this world to whatever sweet ambrosias the next may offer.
