The old African proverb says, ‘The ax forgets; the tree remembers.’ I saw how horrifically it injured us to identify with our oppressors. If we were to keep our souls whole, we couldn’t afford to forget. We had to remember.

When you write something it has to hit the level that you accept as being good.

Their every instinct - and I have to say this is without exception - is to iron out the bumps, and It&#39;s always the bumps that are the most interesting stuff.

I think it&#39;s important to be extremely proud of one&#39;s origins, especially when you are a foreign actress with ethnic features.
